Six hundred years ago Coventry was among England's largest and most important cities and at its heart still stand reminders of that golden age - one of the country's finest mediaeval guildhalls, almshouses and monastic foundations, timber framed shops and pubs. The medieval street pattern that framed these startling buildings was already beginning to disappear, even before Hitler's bombers turned the old city into dust. And now the post war city centre that replaced it, with its pioneering pedestrian precincts and contemporary cityscapes, is changing again. New bars and eating places are springing up in the historic Cathedral Quarter. A huge entertainment and leisure complex is rising on a site where factories once stood. A major project for the Millennium will transform one whole side of the central area, exciting plans for more shopping promise to do the same for another. A year-round programme of festivals and events is breathing new life into the heart of Coventry. The wartime bombing of the original cathedral was seen as a tragic occurrence at the time, however Basil Spence's modern replacement is extraordinary, and testament to the city’s determined nature. Coventry’s main industry was engineering and it was home to some of the worlds biggest car factories at one time. The Heritage Motor Centre museum has a huge collection of British cars and many interactive displays and exhibitions. Coventry’s most famous daughter was Lady Godiva, who accepted the challenge of riding naked through the town on horseback in return for the lowering of taxes upon the population. An annual festival and a statue in the city centre celebrate her memory.
